IBM has made public that they will be ending support for their legacy Netezza databases at the end of June, 2019 and, at this time, the only migration path which IBM is offering is to DB2. IBM’s future state roadmap for this technology is unclear. These factors understandably compelled this major Global Bank based in United States, to modernize their legacy Netezza environments.
MLOGICA was brought in to assist the Bank with large scale, mission critical database migration from Netezza to Oracle Exadata affecting more than 15 million customers in over 25 countries.
Having evaluated various technologies Oracle Exadata in the private Cloud was selected as the best fit for the customer’s needs on account of Oracle Exadata platform’s scalability and performance.
Despite the global company’s database containing hundreds of terabytes, they will be migrated to an Oracle Exadata platform using DBaaS Private Cloud utilizing MLOGICA Database Migration Studio (STAR*M) translation software. STAR*M software translates Netezza database objects including tables, views, stored procedures and triggers from the Netezza Platform to the Oracle Platform, and Netezza SQL to Oracle PL/SQL. The initial scope includes 2 servers of 18,000 database objects, including 3,000 stored procedures. The overall workload includes 30 production servers.
MLOGICA’s STAR*M software will also be used to handle the large-scale data transfer and language translation. STAR*M provides migration support for many major mainframe and distributed platforms, such as Netezza, Teradata, DB2, SQL Server to Oracle Cloud, Oracle Engineered Systems and AWS Platform.
The modernized migration is estimated to save the customer over 30% in operating costs and allow them to focus on delivering timely service to their customers worldwide.
Moving from Netezza to Oracle will allow the customer to standardize their environment on a platform with greater scalability, better performance, and a clear future state roadmap.
